Makeup Basics

So, when you are starting makeup it can be difficult and overwhelming to try and get a routine going, especially if you just don’t know where to start! But it’s important to know we have all been there and it does take time to grasp the basics but here they are.

Fact 1 - what is the order for applying your makeup? Typically it goes like this:

Primer, foundation, concealer, setting powder, eyebrows, eyeshadow, bronzer, blush, highlighter, mascara, lips.

However, if you don’t want to include any of these certain steps then you definitely don’t have to, you can easily skip steps and just go straight forward with other parts. This is also just a guide, many people do different orders but this is just my personal favourite as I have tried many types and this I have found works the best. Also, something to note is that this order works if the products that are typically powder are indeed powder, if you use cream products, the order would be different due to the difficulty on blending cream ontop of powder.

Fact 2 - you also need to know about brands. Certain makeup brands have built up a high end reputation and others drugstore, this for a new makeup user seems intimidating but you need to know that just because certain products  are cheap does not mean the brand is bad or rubbish quality! Sometimes the cheapest are actually the best due to the simplicity of the ingredients which could help with easy blending, layering and more.

Fact 3 - you finally will need to know how to apply products. Now this is a blog post on its own as there’s so much content to cover just on this section but I am going to explain simply. However, by watching a quick “simple makeup routine” post on YouTube, there will easily be guides to visually see how people apply makeup.

  • Powder products use a brush
  • Cream products use a beauty blender or fingers. Light brushes won’t be able to blend this due to its tougher consistency.
  • Certain products such as mascara and lipstick have applicators attached which is simple to use
  • Products on cheeks such as blush, highlighter and contour should be applied upwards to create a more snatched lifted look making you look younger.
  • Eyeshadow should be applied lightly, pressing harder on the shadow for deeper concentration of the colour and tapping of less excess (yet you should be able to build the colour up if high quality). Definition can be achieved with different shades.
